I had the same issue. I pulled the carb out and cleaned it. It was full of sludge from the gas. I had to clean it 3 times before I could get it to start.

the spark plugs on a 2002 sportsman 700 is ontop of the motor behind the carb. remove the carb
Sportsman 400 4x4 94-97 .028 NGKBR8ES
BKR6E plug with 0.035 gap.
try disconnecting gauge cluster
On top of the cylinder head directly under the fuel tank.
buy the owners manual, the sportsman 600 & 700 should use rc7yc and they should be gaped at .035" (.90 mm)
check pickup coil inside the flywheel rt. side as sitting on it the pickup is on the outside of the flywheel but the problem is usually the stator inside the flywheel and is sold as a set.
if its water cooled you have water in the oil ie; head gasket or liner leaking.
on top up engine. below fuel tank. usually has red rubber cover.
To change a spark plug you need to take off the seat and the side panel on the right side. After you do this the spark plug will be in front of the carb and on top of the engine block.
