check your crankshaft position sensor. it is VERY common for these to become loose or damaged. there is an aftermarket kit specifically designed to eliminate this problem by moving the sensor closer to the crankshaft.
check for any vacuum leaks or fuel leaks.
a blocked fuel filter causes spluttering and stalling although it could be a gypsy curse
Usually when you buy a used car it is "as is" unless you get a warranty from the owner. You need to take it to a mechanic.
