I have a Dell Latitude D610 and sometimes the screen goes black for no reason. What's the deal?

Well, I've had that problem also but instead it was with an old Toshiba Notebook Thinkpad. It most likely that inside the hinges where the screen closes the wires sending the signal to light up the screen or to just turn it on are "kinked" or badly twisted or notted. You should take it somewhere to get the wire's replaced or if possible the wires de-notted or untangled.
