Double click on the "My Computer" button (It says "Computer" if using Windows Vista or Windows 7) . Look for the "Local Disk". If more than one Local disk appears, the Hard Drive is partitioned. If your harddrive is toast, then you will need to have the OS installed anew on the new harddrive. So you can just use your existing Vista disks to reinstall your copy of Vista on the new drive.

It depends on what for you are going to use the hard drive. If you want to use it like the system drive, then the answer is Yes, you have to reinstall everything. If you want to use it just to keep data on it, then the answer is No. Just connect to your PC and format it. You have to turn off the computer off before you will start the procedure.
The virus is on the hard drive so if you get a new hard drive the virus will be gone. A cheaper option would be to just reinstall the operating system though. (Vista, Win 7)
insert the windows vista disc. It will give you an option to upgrade or do a clean install. Choose clean install. It wipes your entire hard drive and installs your new vista, just as you would buy it brand new in a shop! i do this every 6 months, its the only GUARANTEED way, to remove any virus.
I'm not sure how your computer works but I had the same problem my laptop came with windows vista but recently I had to restart from scratch I still had windows vista.you should still have vista
