Inserting a inexpensive fuse will prevent this. Be sure to use one rated for 240VAC (like a 3AG fuse) and not an automotive fuse. If you travel often you may want to make yourself a pigtail consisting of a US dryer cord, a overcurrent device (I would use a breaker here), and an outlet (or power strip) from the other country.
