I would suspect the switch first. The next time it fails remove the door panel, unplugg the electrical connection at the window motor and probe the plug with a test lamp to see if the motor is receiving power when you work the switch.

I suspect multiple problems. The blank or intermittent odometer problem is a common problem in the 2002 Ford Explorer. I had that problem, but by simply bending the bracket on which the switch is mounted to make better contact with the clutch pedal mechanism, the problem was solved. Look up under the dash on the drivers side. Follow the brake pedal up and you will find the switch. It is a simple device to adjust or replace.
Check for loose power/ground. Newer cars can have programming issues associated with this problem.
