Slime (or zoogleal mats) are the sticky 'red carpets' bacteria extend in search for a symbiotic partner. Millions of bacterial attachments happen per time unit, let's say per second, inside bowels; but just a few result in symbiotic partnerships. When this 'lucky' event happens, the partners replicate faster than competitors, suppress them and form this kind of colonies where 'offspring' are generated. Just like beehives, these slime grains of fimbriae are just successful bacterial teams forming huge colonies.
In general, this kind of symbiosis involves one fungus and some bacteria.
