I find Facebook to be a really good tool for staying in touch with friends, the search abr helps you find them, and you can still talk to them with the chat, and keep each other updated on your lives using wall posts and pictures and such. I suppose you could use another site if you wanted, but I've tried a few and I think Facebook is the best.
