No you do not. You can wear tampons or nothing at all. The water will fill up your pad just like a diaper. No blood will come out when you are in the water. But be careful because when you get out of the water you need to put a pad on because it will start up again.

Actually, you can. Make sure your bikini bottoms are not too big. The period stops while in water. Wear two pairs of bikini bottoms and board shorts. This way the pad can't come out and it won't matter. I'd be careful in a pool, however. The pad won't come off the swimmer bottoms, but it still is a little dirty. I'm terrified of tampons, so I just use this method. It works, since I'm scared to use tampons. :)
You should probably wear a tampon instead. It'll work better with a bathing suit.
