Ok that's weird. Try logging off first instead of shutting down first. I can't figure why that would happen.
In Windows make sure you have mouse setting "hide cursor while typing" off. If you have this setting on, Windows will hide the cursor whenever you are typing text with your keyboard. You could also try to change to default mouse pointers.
Try resetting back to your default mouse settings, no custom cursors or anything. If that doesn't work go to 'Options' then 'Custom Settings'. Then change your mouse settings.
You can change the default program that opens when downloading a photo for Windows 7 by going to Start and selecting Default Programs. Choose Set Your Default Programs and choose your preferred program from the list on the left hand side, then click OK.
Right click the picture, go to properties. It should say "opens with" click change, then choose windows live pictures.
It is not possible to save the default encoding.

You need to change your Windows Defaults. This option is found in the Control Panel. You can choose which program to open files with by default. It sounds to me like all your files have a Windows Media Player Default setting on.
For windows XP, left click the start button, left click control panel, left click appearance & themes. On the left side of the window it should say mouse pointers, left click that. From there you can change your pointer. On windows Vista, Right click on the desktop, then left click on personalize, then left click on mouse pointers.
Select the icon, rt mouse click, properties, select icon. This assumes Windows XP.

To select which cursor you want to use in Windows 8, put your mouse in the bottom right hand corner of the desktop screen. A menu with 5 icons should appear; select the gear that says "Settings". Then Click on "Control Panel". When the control panel windows appears select the "Appearance and Personalization" section. In the next menu that appears select the "Personalization" section. In this window on the top left hand side you should see some text that says "Change mouse pointers", select that. Form there you can change the default system scheme to other Windows system schemes. You can also download custom pointers form the link provided in the sources and related links section below. Once you download the pointer you want you can select it using the "Browse" option in the mouse menu.
If you're using Windows 7: Right-click the zip/rar file and click "open with">"change default program", then select a program. Alternatively you can go to "Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations" to set programs to open certain file types by default.
