It started at Atlanta. Sherman's march actually started in Chattanooga after the Union won control of the city in late 1863. Sherman then proceeded south to Atlanta destroying smaller towns along the way. After Sherman all but burned Atlanta to the ground he divided his company into two wings, a right wing and a left wing. The right wing which was commanded by Sherman marched towards Macon and the left wing marched toward Augusta. This tactic was used so that they would be a harder target for the enemy. The two wings stayed about 20 to 40 miles apart through the whole campaign. The right wing finally made it to Savannah, GA in late 1864 and took control of the city. Sherman then moved north into South Carolina for more fighting. Seals3434 Mary-ville College History Undergrad
