A good piano theory book to learn is from a book called Basics of Keyboard Theory by Julie Mclntosh Johnson. It has levels from 1-advanced. It is a wonderful book and it helped me pass the CM piano examination.

Well, to actually write the music, a good start for beginning is to download Finale Notepad from finalemusic.com. It's a $9.95 permanent download or you can get the free demo version first to test it out. You can write the music on the computer, play it back, print sheet music, and do a bunch more, and it's all really easy to do with the program. For theory advice, I'm the type who likes to use music theory textbooks. If you are interested in getting a book, my personal favorite is Tonal Harmony. It starts with the very basics and covers some fairly advanced topics by the end. Amazon.com currently has a used copy of "Tonal Harmony, With an Introductory to Twentieth Century Music, Fourth Edition", selling for just $3.25 (It has a blue cover, and make sure it's the hardback book. the paperback is only a workbook). I own it, and it sells normally for over $70, as it is a college textbook.
