A good piano theory book to learn is from a book called Basics of Keyboard Theory by Julie Mclntosh Johnson. It has levels from 1-advanced. It is a wonderful book and it helped me pass the CM piano examination.

What does principles of theory of music mean?
Principles of music theory usually refer to the theory of harmony. That in an of itself is a broad term for defining the entire music realm. The book by Arnold Schoenberg has been considered the authority on music, however, it is a dense and difficult book to digest. Most beginning students really need to learn the rules and so called principles of basic music in order to play. These rules involve the understanding of the music language notation with the use of the staff and notes and the counter part of rests. The six essential basic principles are the framework of notes, rhythm, key signatures, scales, chords and harmonic understanding. Each of these has their own principles and mathematical structure. You will need to study each and it can take 1 to 5 years to cover them sufficient detail to be proficient.

You can get very good books on music theory in most bookstores or music stores... perhaps even the library. Music theory is not easy, however it is something you can teach yourself. You need a keyboard or something for note playing, but mostly, it's reading. You also need blank music sheets. You may be able to find a class in a junior college as well, or seek out a music teacher who tutors from a high school or college.... even a music theory student might be willing to teach you. I also find that as you play instruments or sing, you learn some theory as you go along. Hearing the flavor of a theoretical idea (for example: pentatonic vs major scale, waltz vs. common time) is crucial to understanding and remembering. When you hear the difference, you've already learned it (though may not remember the name for it!).

I would also recommend reading the book "Music Law: How to Run Your Band's business" by Attorney Rich Stim. It is very straight forward, and is not like most law books.
