I recently downloaded iMovie from iLife 06 on my Mackbook Pro. It has 2gb of RAM but I still experience lag when I apply any type of effects. What's the deal with this?

There is the possibility that the graphics card isn't that great, and the processor speed could be the culprit, too. RAM only allows you to find items quickly, such as opening iphoto. A lot of RAM means iphoto will open faster, and this doesn't mean it plays movies very fast. It can find the movie file quickly, but it cannot play it quickly. The processor of the entire laptop may be the culprit.
