If you wish to pursue him, simply have a conversation with him. Explain how you feel currently, what you are looking to pursue, and the reason why you ended things in the first place (the distance).
If he says that he is not interested, I would suggest not being to aggressive about it. If he is hurt, he may just want to move on, so if he says no, you should respect his decision. Also if he does not want to pursue things, you should try to move on from him as well. Be prepared for both answers from him as he may or may not be interested in trying a relationship again
