I was riding my mountain bike and the plastic to the shifter broke and now it wont shift at all. how do i fix that?

Shifters are a bit fiddly to work withm so your best option is probably to replace it. Find out what brand and model it is, then get a replacement. www.bicycletutor.com,www.parktool.com and www.sheldonbrown.com are great sources of bike repair info.

shifter is broke. my ranger was the same way. take the shifter off , and the ear on the other end will be broke. simple to fix. jus find another shifter like i did.

actually it isn't in the linkage that you need to look into, there should be a plastic shield (yours sounds like it broke) on the lower left side of the shifter (take off the plastic or leather shift boot and you will see the plastic part on the left side)
