There are pages and pages of things that can cause a check engine light. You need to have it checked with a scantool. Then the code can be diagnosed and repaired.
If the check engine light is on, use a code scanner to find out why.
I have driven a 2004 passat wagon that apon acceleration the car jolted and vibrated. Turns out the problem was the engine had a rod knocking and pretty much a bad engine, this could have been caused by a water pump or a oil pump not working. I would have a mechanic check it out right away.
changed battery engine light stays on
Could be anything but Check the oil dip stick. If that's ok drive to a VW garage and their sofware will give more details.

Could be the catalytic converter.
That depends on what the failure is. It could.
When my check engine light comes on, it is caused by the temperature sensor not working. As soon as the light comes on, my temperature drops to cool. If the light goes out, the temp gauge returns to normal.
The check gauges light comes on when one of the gauges is out of its safe range. It could be the alternator over or under charging, oil pressure low, or the engine overheating. The check gauges light comes on when one of the gauges is out of its safe range. It could be major or minor. You will have to have the codes read to know possible causes.
that could mean so many things...
The only way to know for certain is to read the diagnostic code. Code readers are becomming quite inexpensive and in my opinion, everyone should have one.
