It is true that even though Saint Peter the first Pope was indeed married, Catholic priests are prohibited from marrying. Based on the words of the apostle, "Master, we have left everything to follow you. What shall be our reward?" (Matthew 19:27), the Catholic Church believes that many of the apostles had indeed been married with families, but that when Jesus invited them to become his followers, they made provisions for their wives' and children's welfare and left everything to follow Him. Not that married men and women cannot be His followers: they can be, and are. The Catholic Church believes that like the early apostles, God calls some members to live out a radical witness to Jesus Christ - to set aside living with a father or a mother, to set aside their hopes for a son, a daughter, husband, wife - and devote themselves to following Him alone, in imitation of the Apostles, many of whom left their homes and families, when the rabbi from Nazareth appeared in their midst and said, "Follow me." The Catholic Church has over the centuries institutionalized this tradition of leaving behind everyone and everything to devote oneself to the service of Jesus Christ. Note Not all rites within the Catholic Church practice celibacy of the clergy. There are a few reasons for the Roman Catholic Church having adopted the practice. For many centuries the Church encouraged, but did not enforce the practice. It was not until there was both danger for the families of the clergy as well as the want to prevent the inheritance of church property and authority from a priest to his children that the church made celibacy compulsory. It should be noted that some Eastern Rites allow their clergy to be married and, in the Roman Rite, a married pastor that converts from another denomination may receive special dispensation to receive ordination as a married man.

Can a deacon become a priest?

In most Churches that have the threefold order (deacons, priests and bishops), like the Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Churches, most deacons are ordained priests after one year being a deacon. However, some elect to remain as permanent deacons as this is where they believe their calling lies. Also, in the Roman Catholic Church married men are allowed to become deacons but are not, as yet, allowed to become priests (although some Catholic priests are now married - such as married Anglican priests who have moved to the Roman Catholic Church)> therefore, for married men the diaconate is the only order open to them and they remain deacons permanently.

Why are Catholic priests not allowed to marry?

The Vow of celibacy is meant to help priests focus on a relationship with God, rather than a relationship with a partner; Catholic priests are an alter Christus - another Christ, they are to mirror Him in their lives, they are His representatives; they are already "married" to the Church.

Why are priests not allow marry?

In most Christian churches, clergy are allowed to marry. Indeed in some churches there are priests married to each other (e.g. in the Church of England there are many husband and wife clergy families). This includes most Protestant churches and the Orthodox church, where parish priests can be married but monks, bishops and above remain celibate. The largest church with celibate priests is the Roman Catholic church. In this church, it is held that celibacy helps the priest to focus on God and service to the church. However, the issue of celibacy is not a matter of faith or theology, but a vow imposed on the majority of western-rite (Latin) Roman Catholic priests. The major reason for this requirement is to prevent a conflict between family life and service to a priest's parishioners. Contrary to widely held opinion, there are, and always have been, married priests in the Catholic church. Eastern-rite Catholic priests, such as the Maronites, and, more recently, already married Anglican priests who convert to Catholicism and wish to be Catholic priests, continue to serve in the priesthood. One condition of priesthood for married former-Anglican priests is that they may not serve in the role of principal parish priest, in order to conform with the principle of celibacy imposed on the majority of Roman Catholic priests. It is worth remembering that many of the early priests of the church, including the first pope (St Peter) were married.

How can you find married priests in the Catholic Church?

Roman Catholic priests are required to be celibate and refrain from marriage and all sexual activity including masturbation and fantasy. In the early centuries of Christianity and into the fourth century, it was not uncommon for clergy to be married and even to have children. However, after their ordination, clerics were required to be continent (i.e. refrain from sexual relations with their wives). The Council of Elvira in 306 prohibited clergy from sexual intercourse as did the Council of Nicaea in 325 and the Council of Carthage in about 390.For Orthodox Christians and Eastern Catholics, The Council of Quinisext in 692 permitted conjugal relations between priests and deacons and their wives. Therefore, married priests and deacons are the norm in Orthodoxy and Uniat Churches, but celibacy has remained the norm in Latin Rite Roman Catholicism. In certain circumstances however, Protestant or Anglican clergy who are received in the Catholic Church may be permitted to remain married and be ordained in the Catholic Church, provided their spouses consent. Therefore, only Catholic priests who have converted from another denomination could be expected to be married. In any case this is not the norm or ideal.
