Only that particular individual can form their own opinion in these matters. Not all individuals are compatible and sometimes unfortunately just because we may be interested in someone those feelings are not always returned. In this case going back to a former friend may have carried the possibility that they were not over them to begin with in which they tried to move on with you and unfortunately did not have those particular feelings towards your relationship. We cannot control everything nor anothers feelings but we can learn from situations and be thankful for the time we did have with someone and move forward happily for them and yourself. I realize it sounds easier said then done but with time you will see that moving forward is in your best interest.
