I use to work for the post office. They normally hold it for 30 days and if it is not picked up, it is returned to sender. Since a signature is required, it will be returned because addressee did not sign and marked attempted delivery.
I just received a certified letter notice that the Post Office attempted to deliver to my home address on 2 different occasions. It also stated by a specific date (2-3 days from the last delivery attempt) this Certified Letter would be delivered back to the sender. Hope this helps !
In my experience, quite simply, "nothing." It's as if you didn't send it at all. I sent a no-trespass letter via certified mail. It was never picked up or signed for after 4 notices were left with the recipient. Then, the letter was returned to me with proof that the post office had left notices on several dates. When I inquired about filing the notice to begin with, one police officer informed me that the no-trespass order would be in effect whether the recipient signed for it or not. After realizing the person had not yet picked up the letter, I notified the police again and got a completely different answer from another officer. Basically, ignoring a certified letter means you don't have to do what's inside of it!!!! So, apparently the person you're trying to keep away from your property ends up with the power. How ridiculous!! No accountability.

If the item is too big to fit in a letter box, you can drop it off at a post office or get it picked up and delivered by a logistics company.

What is the probability that the letter P is picked when a letter is picked at random from the word STUPID!
Officially the time is two to seven days. My experience is a first class letter mailed at the post office or a box picked up the same day will get from origin to destination in two or three days, excluding Sunday.
