Females mature faster than males, making it common for adolescents males to date girls a year or at most two younger than they are. It is taboo, inappropriate, and uncommon for a boy to date a girl three years younger than him. Consider the logistics; a high school senior would be dating a freshman, an eight grade would be dating a fifth grader, a fourth grader would be dating a kindergarten student. It doesn't make sense.
Females reach sexual maturity at about sixteen years of age, and show many signs of sexual maturity (secondary sex characteristics, etc.) before that age. At that age, they also lack the judgment and emotional maturity to know when they are being used. If a boy/teenager is dating a girl/teenager that is more than two years younger than he is, there is often a sexual motivation. It should be noted that this does not necessarily apply to young adults; by the mid 20s, a two or three year age difference means little, and by the late 20s-early 30s it becomes insignificant.
Moral: be wary of a guy that's interested in you if he's more than a grade or so ahead of you. Ask yourself why he's going after someone your age instead of one of his peers. If he's out of high school or several years older than you, it's inappropriate. If your parents would flip if they found out, it's inappropriate. If he doesn't want to be seen in public with you, it's inappropriate. If he isn't allowed on your school grounds because of his age, it's inappropriate. Talk to your parents!
