It could be a number of things to include diet, IBS, or disease. I had this issue where my breathe and sweat smelled like feces. I could smell the feces on the towel after drying off from showering. I was taking chlorophyll, zinc, apple cider vinegar (both orally and applied to skin), but nothing worked. But it seems that I did not have enough fiber in my diet and the old feces were backed up in the walls of my intestines and the bacteria entering my bloodstream. I took Fiber Choice chewable tablets at twice the recommended dosage and four days later I didn't have the feces breathe or sweat. During the first four days of taking fiber, my bowels moved 2-3 times a day, no pain, normal movements, just more volume. The fiber flushed out the old feces, which was exactly how my breathe and sweat would smell. It has been about 5 days since the feces odor and I'm reluctant to say that I'm cured, but at least it has been a NICE 5 days! Fiber Choice is sold at most supermarkets and drug stores for $12 for 90 tablets. I take 3 at night and 1 in the morning and my bowel movements are back to normal and I feel totally empty after a BM instead of like I may need to go again soon. I also went back to the doctor and he did not notice any odor from my breathe or body. He tested for yeast (candida?) by swabbing my tongue and it tested positive and he prescribed an oral antibiotic. Hope this helps!

The best thing to do is to take a small sample of the pup's feces and the pup in to be checked out by your Veterinarian. This could be from internal parasites or old dry blood caused by a virus or who knows? This is why your pup needs to be checked up by a Veterinarian.
It depends on the size of your rectum. If you have a big rectum, you could store a lot of feces.
