Of course they can. Why would you possibly think that your age provides any protection or excuse for you to avoid paying your debts? Maybe what you heard is that by the time people are 75 they are mature enough to not have to be hounded to do as they promised in contracts, and wise enough to not be fooled by dumb comments. Understanding, if the law is what you felt is the thing all should rely on....NOT PAYING YOUR DEBTS AND ADHERING TO CONTRACTS YOU MADE IS AGAINST THE LAW.
