Tips for Teachers: Creating an Effective Writing Assignment?

In my Tips for Teachers posts, I address a specific topic of interest to current or future educators. This post focuses on writing assignment development. Writing assignments can be a good way to assess student learning. Here are some tips for creating an effective writing assignment.·Decide on a theme/topic. What do you want your students to write about? Would a general theme or a more specific theme better suit the course content/objectives? What type of topic would best serve your students (a dialogic essay, an opinion paper, a report, etc.)? Once you’ve decided these things, write up a description of the theme/topic and your expectations for how your students should address it.·Decide on specific guidelines. Specific guidelines are important because they help students meet your expectations and help you avoid a barrage of questions. Suggestions of guidelines to include are word count, formatting style (MLA, APA, etc.), deadlines, etc. These guidelines should be included on the same sheet as the theme/topic.·Create a grading rubric. It’s important to develop a grading rubric to help you objectively grade student papers. The rubric should be based on the specific guidelines you set forth. You can find a variety of grading rubrics for writing assignments online that you can customize to your specific assignment. Provide your students with a copy of this rubric so they know what your expectations are.·Provide your students with timely feedback. After students submit their papers to you, provide them with timely feedback so that they get the most out of the assignment.
