The last digit of the postal barcode is a check digit, calculated based on all the other digits to facilitate validation of the scanned code and thus prevent misreads.

Disregard the first and last bar, they mark the beginning and end of the bar code. Each digit in a bar code is made up of 2 tall and 3 short bars, starting with the second bar read 5 bars as 7,4,2,1,0. which ever numbers has the tall bars add them to get the first digit of the bar code. 7 and 4 is 0.
Digit Check
Code 39 is the simplest of alpha-numeric barcodes to use that does not require a check digit to be calculated. Although there is a Mod43 Check digit that is required by standard for LOGMARS and HBIC barcodes. The Code 39 barcode is also known as 3 of 9 Barcode, Code 3 of 9 and Bar Code 39.

__ .6 would be the proper way (a bar written over the 6, which means that digit repeats indefinitely). For common calculations, people may round to a certain number of decimal places. In that case you would have 0.67 or 0.6667 where the last digit is 7 because that digit gets rounded up.
1st digit of the code is the last digit of the year. 2nd and 3rd numbers give you the number of the week. Example: 304 would be the 4th week in January of 2013. 914 would be the 14th week of 2009 - better put that one back!!

There is a checksum built into the barcode numbers, just as is commonly done for social security IDs, for instance.An example checksum could be that the last digit in the barcode number should also be the last digit of the sum of all the previous digits, together with a requirement that the digits cannot all be zero. This would not discover every failed scan, but would find the vast majority of them.
