I'n most cases replacement is your only option but if you can find an alternator repair shop the Rectifier (diode) assembly can be replaced, if it has damaged the stator (copper windings) is not likely practical to repair..

You can count on the alternator diodes being fried. But you might be able to have it tested. After that, much of the OTHER stuff has protection. Unfortunately, polarity protection is difficult if not impossible with an alternator.

You may have blown fuses, burnt wires, or even "killed" a computer. You may need to tow it to a service shop. ANOTHER ANSWER Did it start at all after you put in the battery? It COULD be that you destroyed the diodes inside the alternator. If you don't have experience rebuilding an alternator, don't even bother to try to repair it, just get another. Connecting a battery backwards will almost ALWAYS destroy the alternator diodes. As for the computer, it's possible that you fried it as well as the radio and just about anything else that might have transistors or diodes built in. In short, take it to a qualified mechanic.

You hooked up the batteries in Series whch pumped allot of current thur the circuit..which probably fried the voltage regulator and probably blew the diodes on your alternator. you can have the alternator tested at an auto parts store.. but I'd replace the voltage regulator ( if its not part of the alternator ) along wth the alternator.. gpawlak1@rochester.rr.com

Jump start the vehicle again. If you can start it using jumper cables then there is nothing wrong with the computer. If you connect the batteries in reverse you certainly can blow diodes and any other computer components. However, if the battery was already dead I'd suspect that the alternator is already fried.

Most auto parts retailers will do that for you without charge. If you can't get spark and NOTHING works, just start with the computer and see if you can get a diagnostic code. If components have failed, the computer can usually tell you what's wrong. Good luck, that can be a very expensive mistake, depending on how the manufacture electrically protected individual components.

Need more info... How old is it? Do you drive short distances? Does it sit around not driven a lot? Check for a short, bad alternator, or fried battery. If you take the car to an alternator shop, they can usually tell you for free if it's the battery or the alternator.
