because a fossil is created from something that hardened while the animal was dead in it. if you leave a corps out in the open then most of it will be eaten, but if that same corps was covered in some oil or sap then it could potentially become a fossil after about a miilion yeaRS
Animal parts that are soft and don't have a skeleton leave the worst imprints. Fossils are made with animal parts that are hard and durable.

A fossil is evidence of a once living animal. A fossil is created when an animal dies in a mud or other soft dirt or sediment. Over time, the animal will decompose and leave the bones. Over time, these bones will get covered by dirt, rocks water, etc. After a couple thousand years the bones will get compressed into sediment, waiting to be discovered. Something similar to a fossil is and imprint. This is where an impression of a plant or animal is pushed into a soft sediment and hardens.
Fossil fuels (coal, petroleum, and natural gas) are made, over long periods of time, from vegetable matter including algae, ferns, etc. Sometimes in popular culture, fossil fuels are said to result from dinosaur remains, but that is not the case; dinosaurs, like any other animal, will decay after death, and do not leave behind any fossil fuels (although they do leave behind fossils of other sorts).
