There are many different variables to consider when it comes to length of service, you can serve upwards to 30+ years, however if you are not progressing professionally (getting promoted) the military will release you from service or not allow you reenlist. As long as you are doing your job and moving up in rank you can stay as long as you wish, typical enlistments range from 3-6 years but you can retire at 20 years.
