The same applies. Anything said in the "confessional" is between you and God. The priest only acts as an intermediary between you and the Lord and offers consolation and maybe guidance. Only you, the sinner, can right the wrong ... nor can you be absolved of a sin you have no desire to correct, in this case, keeping it within the confessional, which is absolute.

To be atoned from the sin, one has to absolve themselves of the sin, and that means doing whatever is necessary, however sacrificial, to right the wrong.

It is normal practice in cases of serious criminal acts for the Priest to withhold absolution (conditional absolution) until the penitent makes a public confession to the appropriate civil authorities.

(as a side note there are some offences for which absolution can only be received from the Grand Penitentiary in Rome)
