This completely depends on the country, and in the USA, the state. For example if you kill someone in self defense you may be charged for manslaughter. The general guideline is no not kill people, then you can't get arrested for it.
I don't believe the above answer is completely correct. If someone is attacking you, and you know they intend to do serious bodily harm to you, then you do have the right to defend yourself. If it is truly self defense, then I really doubt you will be charged with manslaughter.
