Depends on the engine you are asking about. The 3.4 V6 is (NOT) an interference engine but the 4 cylinder is not and in fact does not use a cam belt but instead uses a chain. If the belt breaks on the V6 it will NOT damage the engine. Replace it every 90,000 miles and you have nothing to worry about.
(edited by billtech66, a 67 year old master tech, and the 3.4L Toyota is NOT an interference engine.)
Gates ( they make timing belts etc . ) lists a TIMING BELT for the 3.4 L - V6 engine in a 2004 Toyota Tacoma
I checked the Gates website ( they make timing belts etc. ) and they list a TIMING BELT for the 3.4 liter - V6 engine in a 2004 Toyota Tacoma ( also , it IS NOT an interference engine )
Gates ( they make timing belts etc. ) shows ( 90,000 miles ) for the 1998 to 2004 Toyota Tacoma 3.4 liter V6 engine timing belt
According to the Gates website ( they make timing belts etcetera ) The 3.4 liter V6 engine in a 2004 Toyota Tacoma has a timing BELT
there are 3 belts total.
Car wont run & on interference engines there will be serious internal engine damage.
most snapped timing belts will in most cases cause engine damage, the only exception would be a freewheeling engine were valve to piston contact would be minimal an interference type engine would cause damage.
Toyota 4 cyl have always came with timing chains. The v6 have timing belts
NO. According to eHow Chrysler has identified the 2.5L V6 engine as an "interference" engine. Care must be taken with all "interference" engines to replace timing belts before failure to prevent catastrophic damage to the engine. Care should also be taken to properly align the timing marks when replacing the timing belts. Even a ONE TOOTH MISALIGNMENT CAN CAUSE SEVERE DAMAGE TO THESE ENGINES.
Replace both belts at 105,000 miles. This is an interference engine and as such it is critical that you replace these belts. If the cam belt breaks you will have serious engine damage.
According to the Gates website ( they make timing belts etcetera ) The 3.3 liter V6 engine in a 1999 Mercury Villager does have a timing BELT The engine IS AN INTERFERENCE ENGINE So , if the timing belt breaks , engine damage will occur
Ha yes timing belt breakage in any car can cause damage to the engine... things like bent valves, scored cylinder walls and possible engine failure. That is why the idea is to replace timing belts before they break.
