It is legal for United States citizens to get married in Peru, but any US citizens who wish to get married in Peru must present certain legal documents to the Peruvian authorities in order to become legally married in the country. First, the citizens must present a sworn statement known a Certificado de Solteria, which states that they are both legally free to marry in Peru. The Certificado de Solteria can be obtained by contacting the American Citizen Service at the American Embassy. It must be signed in front of a consular official and notarized by a consular official to be valid. If one or both of the US citizens are divorced, they will need to provide a copy of their divorce decree as well. Both US citizens will also need to provide Peruvian authorities with a copy of their birth certificate that has been translated into Spanish. US citizens can find a list of approved translators by visiting the website for the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In addition to these documents, US citizens who wish to get married in the country should contact an attorney in Peru for any specific to make sure that their marriage will be legal and recognized in Peru. Legal marriages in Peru are recognized by the United States Government.
