If you can't stand him, it's best to be straight forward with him. If you're not out to hurt his feelings, be gentle about it. Since you can't stand him and do not want him around, it's best to get that cleared out of the way ASAP. If he is going to take it the wrong way no matter what you tell him, then don't worry about how he takes it, unless he keeps coming around.
