Friend, The police and military are there for our protection. The authorities are referred to as "God's Servants," ie by governing, keeping order, and protecting (Rom. 13:6). Even if you are not a cop, if someone is trying to kill you, you have the right to protect yourself. And in an officer's case allowing yourself to be killed may also allow a killer to slay others. Possibly you have misunderstood the commandment (#5 for RC, #6 for Protestants) in Exodus 20:13. Only the King James Version reads, "Thou shalt not kill." Most other translations read, "You shall not commit murder." There is a difference. To look up the text go to www.Biblegateway.com and check it out. Of course, well trained police officers know that deadly force is rarely necessary and they are pretty good at avoiding it. Fr. Ed (protestant - Episcopal) :)
