The thing NOT to do is cut across multiple lanes of traffic to get there. Ease your way over to the appropriate lane to exit from. If you miss your exit, either you take the next exit to get turned around, or you take the next exit and take surface roads to get to where you're going to. A lot of motorists like to think they're NASCAR superstars in situations like this, and they'll cut across multiple lanes at the last second. All this accomplishes is to endanger them and all other motorists around them.
Give up and proceed to the next exit.
It is illegal and extremely dangerous.
If you miss the exit ramp
SAFELY merge into and through the slower lanes of traffic. If you cannot do so before your exit is reached, continue on the next exit by driving in Lane 4 - exit there and then return one exit to your original destination.
