If you are facing south, then the east is to your left.
If you were standing exactly at the North Pole, the only possible direction you would be able to travel would be south.

When facing East, South is on your Right, North on your Left and West is behind you. this is the same whether you are in Ireland or Australia.
When facing south, west is to your right.
If you face East, North is to your left, South is to your right, and West is behind you.
That would be the West.East is to your right, and South is directly behind you.
The direction you are facing has no bearing on the direction the wind is blowing. It can come from any where.
If you are facing north, the direction behind you would be south.
The usage of the north star, or Polaris, is to find which way you are facing. If you are facing in the direction of it, you are facing north. If you are facing the opposite direction of the north star, you are facing south. If you are facing left of the north star, you are facing east. If you are facing right of the north star, you are facing west.
