Putting all your savings into just one place is a bad idea. Everyone needs three buckets of money. 1. Emergency fund. This is alway put into short term savings accounts or money market funds. 2. Investment money. This is money you can leave alone for at least six to eight years or more, therefore you can afford to take more risk with this money. Equities (stocks or stock mutual funds) are often a good choice for this money. 3. Retirement money. This is money for age 59 1/2 or older. When you are more than eight years away from retirement, this money is usually also best invested in equities.
