If you ask a question of people's opinions on this website and somebody answers that question should others be entitled to edit or delete that answer just because they think their opinion is the best?

No, unless the person does not follow the rules, questions should be correct. Not opinionated. If an opinion is wanted, all opinions should remain and none edited or deleted.
