I'm not an expert on the subject, but as far as I know you can connect to Xbox LIVE by:
-Wireless
-Ethernet Cable
-ICS (internet Connection Sharing, must have ethernet cable)
I use ICS, and it works pretty well.
For wireless, first you need to buy a wireless adapter (Available at all good retail shops), plug it in to the back off your Xbox and voila! The further away you are from your router/modem, the worse the connection will be.
For ethernet cable connection, use the ethernet cable supplied with the Xbox. Again, plug one end into the Xbox, the other end into your router/modem, and voila! Your connection will usually be medium/good with an ethernet cable.
If you are too far away from your router/modem, but close to your computer, use ICS. You need to plug one of the cable into the Xbox, and one end into your PC/laptop. Then, on your computer, go to Windows Help and Support, search "enabling ICS", then click "using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). Then, to the right, click "enabling ICS", and follow the on-screen instructions.
