∙ 14y agoNo. the PS3 can hook up with an ethernet cat 5 or 6 cable and be wired rather than wireless. There is a spot in the back of the PlayStation 3 to plug it in. You do not have to be online to use the PS3, however if you already have an internet source where you will be using the PS3 it makes sense to hook up the connection. I purchased a wireless router and then found that I liked the Ethernet Cat 6 cable connection better because of faster download speeds according to the test mode of the PS3. I also found that sometimes the PS3 took a while to find the wireless signal and it took longer for it to come on-line. You'll still have to buy a router if your cable modem can not support another ethernet cable, but they cost less than the wireless routers do.

∙ 10y agoA router is an integral part of a network, so any kind of network traffic has to go through a router by default or it won't be online. If you want to play over the PSN, you'd be connecting to a router wirelessly, or by ethernet cable in the case of a PS3.
