Yes. The proximity of fabric doesn't change the magnetic properties of magnetic paint. Umm... the paint will still be magnetic even if you bury it in the desert where nobody will find it. However, depending on the thickness of the fabric, it may not noticably attract ferrous objects any longer! Try experimenting with thin fabrics like nylon or silk and then slightly thicker fabrics -- to find how thick the fabric can be to still permit the paint to act as a magnet for your purposes.

Can you ever get fabric paint out of fabric?
Just did it. I was using fabric paint on a canvas tote bag and it got smeared bad deep into the texture of the canvas. It was still wet but drying quick so we used toothpicks to scrape off all we could. Then we used Goof Off (after testing a small area) rubbing it in with a stiff little paint brush that we cut short to make a miniature scrub brush. That dissolved the paint but it was still in the fabric. Using a cotton swab we went over it with water. That diluted it further and we were able to use a cloth to blot it out. All this thanks to my husband who held his cool while I was freaking out. Fabric paint is meant to be permanent on cloth. You really cannot get it out.

Water based paint is fairly easy to remove. If it is still wet, you can just simply wipe it off with a wet cloth. For paint which has dried, you can use mild soapy water and then rubbing alcohol.

If you are looking for a limited wear for the shirt (one or two weeks) any paint will do, however if you are looking to use the shirt over an extended period (mine is now over 20 years old and still a favourite when I work in the studio) I strongly recommend finding good fabric paints. For the spattered look it is best to use "fabric" paints, and to "set" them in the manner recommended by the manufacturer... see the back of the bottles for full instruction. Fabric paints will give you a less brittle result and allow you to continue to wear the shirt for some time... Regular "house" paint will crack and peel over time...

For Clothes You do this: Scrape away any excess paint with a dull knife or hard-bristled brush. Be careful not to damage the fabric itself.Blot the stain with a damp cloth to moisten the surface. If this releases any excess paint, scoop it up with a spoon.Pour a few drops of varnish remover onto a sponge and blot the stain to loosen the paint particles.Dab the surface with a clean, dry cloth, and then machine-wash the clothing, following the label guidelines. If that's confusing try this:Blot the stain with a wet rag if the puff paint is still wet. Blot away as much of the puff paint as possible before it dries.Spray hairspray on the puff paint if it is dried and rub the fabric together vigorously. This should start to remove some of the puff paint. Spray more hairspray and continue to rub the fabric together until the majority of the puff paint is removed. Wipe away the last remnants of puff paint with a wet rag.Apply mineral spirits to a rag and blot it on the paint-stained fabric. This is a last-resort scenario and should only be used if the stain will not budge. Be sure to use mineral spirits in a well-ventilated room and wear rubber gloves and a face mask.
