Normally, your hard drive tries to store information in an organised manner. Each file is stored all together, and it runs quickly. I agree, automatic defraggers defrag whenever required without eating system resources almost coexisting with other programs. There is no need to wait for manual defrags to complete or set up scheduled tasks that can often get missed.
