Young people's brains continue to develop until about the age of 22. During that time the nerve connections are still forming. Alcohol in the body can and does affect the way these connections are made, and can not only predispose you to drinking and addiction, but can also cause learning disturbances that may be permanent.
People who start drinking early in life are statistically more likely to become alcoholics. This is partially because the reasons mentioned above, but also because there are usually reasons why young people begin drinking -- often due to exposure to drinking in the home, attempts to escape life problems, or simply discovering that they really, really like to drink. All of these things point to a predisposition toward alcoholism, which is often inherited.
It is also true that most people who drink heavily for long enough will eventually develop Alcoholism, even if it does not already run in their families. Therefore, early drinking is a slippery path at best. Lay off until it's legal. If you can't, you may already be in trouble.
