Great question. Etymology of common words is often shrouded in a historical mist. The word grape is reputed to come from archaic English "graper" which was a tool to grab grapes - so you see that grab and grape have the same source. However, maybe the graper was named after the grape. It is likely that the color is a reflection of the fruit.
