15 mpg (miles per gallon).
The key to this 'word problem' is understanding that "miles to the gallon" or more commonly, 'miles per gallon', means DIVISION. So, 300 miles per 20 gallons means:
(300 miles) / (20 gallons) = 15 miles per gallon.
You just drove your car 350 miles and used 30 gallons of gas. You know that the gas tank on your car holds 1612 gallons of gas. If the gas you buy costs $3.00 per gallon, what would you pay to fill one-half of your tank?
30 gallons. Simple really.
Divide the miles by the gallons used. 315.5/11.4 = 27.6754386
20.9 miles per gallon 389 / 18.6 = 20.9140
20mi = 1gal 555mi x (1gal/20mi) = 27.27gal
He needs to know how many gallons the tank holds. Then the can divide the amount of miles by the amount of gallons, to find out how many miles per gallon he gets.
20.9 mpg
So you need to divide. Miles per gallon means the miles is in the numerator and gallons is the denominator. You may benefit from this article, which I wrote.
870 miles divided by 22 miles per gallon =gallons 870/22 = 39.5 gallons
1360 miles at 20 miles per gallon = 1360/20 = 168 gallons of gas
About 131 gallons.
