Size 1/4 has been put as the "Point of no return". However everyone heals differently. If you stretch too fast you may cause a blow out, break, or tear. Tear is when your ear tears and bleeds but doesn't tear all the way. Break is when your ear breaks all the way threw. Blow out is when your ear literally "blows out" causing the ear to look similar to a cat's butt hole. Not pretty :P Taking it slowly with stretching will prevent this and help for easier healing. If stretching hurts wait a few hours to a week before stretching again. After you have comfortably stretched one- two sizes up wait about 3-4 weeks before trying to stretch again. For after care soak your ear in warm salt water. Just put some salt in water and heat it up a bit and hold your ear in it for a few minutes every day. Good luck to you!

One gauge, and one gauge only. If you cheat and stretch more than the next gauge you will damage the tissue, once it's damaged it will not return to normal when the plugs are removed.

My ears are at a normal sized hole right now is it okay if you go to a 4 gauge from that hole or will it cause a blow-out or rip your ear?

Depends on what you mean by "normal". Generally lobe piercings are an 18 gauge.... so going up to a 4 will probably rip... I would suggest talking to a piercer to find out what gauge you should use
