According to Erickson, as humans grow and develop they pass through 8 stages. One of the stages that humans goes through is Initiative vs. Guilt. This is a stage in early childhood in which a child (ages 3-5) focuses on learning social and cognitive skills: one of those skills would be sharing with classmates. During this stage a healthy, developing child learns to cooperate with others. If the child does not learn these ideas in this stage he/she will have trouble interacting with other children. The fourth grader who refuses to share demonstrates immobilized guilt and is hesitant to share.

What does it mean when a wife refuses to discuss her careless behavior and drives her husband to suspect she does not love him?

Is the husband being overly critical? That might be a reason. If the husband can have a non-judgemental conversation with the wife, instead of trying to discuss the behavior, discuss why she won't talk to him and how she feels about the husband's perception of her behavior. If he can get to why she's shutting him out, he may be able to have a reasonable discussion of his view of her behavior.
