The light leaving a flashlight when it is turned on and then off will tend to move in a straight line. The problem is that there is air that the light will have to move through. The air will scatter or even absorb the photons. Eventually all the photons will be scattered and absorbed.
If the experiment was conducted in outer space, the photons would travel a great distance as there is little in the way of particles to scatter the photons. Here on earth, the atmosphere would absorb the energy as there is relatively little of it released from the flashlight.
