By companion, I guess you mean wildcard. Let's say the file name is lostfile.txt. The first wildcard is the *. If you remember the first part of a file was lost you could type lost*.txt. If you don't remember it was a txt file, you could type lost*.*. Now for another wildcard, the ? If you were looking for a lostfile2011.txt and you couldn't remember which year it was, you could type lostfile20??.txt. You could combine the two by typing lostfile20??.*.
Not 'important' exactly - but it may help you locate a file you're looking for if you're not sure of the file-name but you know what day you installed it.
If you know the date of the file, you can use windows explorer search function to locate the lost file. If you are asking about how to undo changes to a file you already saved, then the answer is you can not.
Without everyone using the same system , it would be impossible to know locate folders or files.
