If the correspondance contained personal information, such as your SSN/DOB - Be sure to notify both the mail carrier and the sender. If it contained a check, then ensure the issuer knows to cancel and resend that check. Beyond that, if it is a one-off occurence, and there is no pattern of mail intrusion, you'll sleep better just accepting the fact that it could be random transport damage. Take the envelope to a post office and tell them your problem. The post mark has a lot of information on it that the post office can determine where it was mailed. They might be able to trace it. Or call the addressee to see what the envelope contained.
